Independent

Too many magazines that you find at the grocery store are owned by massive outdoor media monopolies more concerned with selling NFTs than sharing good adventure stories. Trails Mag is completely independent, written for—and by—those of us actually sleeping in the dirt.

Coffee Table Quality

Trails Mag isn't mass-produced. It's printed on high-quality paper, it's thick with content, and it puts an emphasis on high-quality design and beautiful large-format photography. This isn't a magazine you throw out when the next one arrives.

Real Adventure Stories

This is what we've all been missing from legacy publications. True, exciting, inspiring stories from adventurers in destinations you're going to want to add to your bucket list, mixed in with gear reviews, destination highlights, and explainers you can actually use.

Fewer Ads

Legacy magazines stayed afloat (or didn't) by keeping issues ridiculously cheap and jamming ads into every nook and cranny. No more of that. We're strictly limiting ads and carefully choosing advertisers that we believe in and can impact your adventures.

Print First

We want to bring you the things you didn't realize you needed to know. The beauty—and fun—of print is the ability to browse and discover, something a web search will always have a hard time replicating. That's why Trails will only be available in print. No paywalls, no logins, just your mailbox.

Awesome stuff. You get what you pay for!

So, Trails is a great magazine. The quality is really great, and the articles and thoughtfulness in the articles is very well thought out. I honestly thought about writing something for an issue (I'm a therapist and would have PLENTY to say about mental health and the outdoors) but the caliber of writing is such that I need to brush up on technical writing before I get going.

I will say that I have subscribed to other outdoor mags, and while you get a lot for the money, the content is saturated and not as deep. Trails provides depth and quality, which is why.I say you get what you pay for. It is more expensive than other mags, but you get a very high end product in this too.

The next best thing to actually having a pack on your back

When I was 14 I went backpacking for the first time, and I also started reading a certain backpacking focused magazine. It would come in the mail and I would sit on the floor of my bedroom and read every word of every page of each issue. As I grew up and that magazine lost it's way and eventually went out of print, I kept hiking. Then in my late 30s a YouTube backpacker mentioned she had a column in a new magazine. I went online and ordered the most recent issue (#4 at the time), and when I got it in my hands I was suddenly 14 again and meticulously reading every word of every page. I then subscribed, and bought the rest of the back issues. I can't express what this magazine makes me feel. It is a physically beautiful thing, heavy paper and stunning pictures. The articles are on the short side, but they leave you feeling satisfied. There isn't a hint of paid promotional content hiding in gear reviews that are just stats and press release fodder. Trails is worth way more than the subscription price and I'm so happy that it found it's way into my life.

Best mail day!

I love getting my new Trails Mag in the mail — I know I can always expect great photography and interesting stories from other backpackers. I feel like Trails Mag reports on and shares a lot of “underground” stories that wouldn’t necessarily have a home anywhere else, which makes it much more enjoyable to read. You can tell it’s created by other folks who really just love to be outside hiking around too :)

Authentically welcoming to all adventurers.

This magazine is my favorite by far. I have previously read National Geographic and Outside Magazine to catch up on adventure stories, but as soon as I picked up Trails Magazine for the first time I knew it was something special. The stories featured each quarter are a fantastic mix of reviews, recipes, thoughtful questions, and tales of travel. What surprises me in each story is the undeniable authenticity. That is where this magazine really shines to me. Throughout each issue are stories that leave me feeling more like I read a diary than a news release. All this while still welcoming people who like the outdoors through all skill levels, even the aspiring.
